Session Title Earthquake Hazard Assessment of Hidden Active Faults
Main Convener Dr. Mario Juan Aurelio (University of the Philippines, Philippines)
Co-convener(s) Prof. Shinji Toda (Tohoku University, Japan)
Session Description The central Philippines was recently struck by 2 destructive earthquakes within a span of only one-and-a-half years. A magnitude M6.9 earthquake hit the island of Negros on 6 February 2012. Less than 100 km to the east, the island of Bohol was struck by a magnitude M7.2 temblor on 15 October 2013. These earthquakes caused the deaths of several hundred people, affected millions more and incurred direct damages to infrastructure costing hundreds of millions of dollars. Both earthquakes were generated by hidden thrust faults that have not been mapped previously. The hidden nature of the earthquake-generating structures poses a challenge to researchers in the field of earthquake hazard assessment (EHA). Discovering these buried structures is key in establishing a robust EHA of seemingly earthquake-free settings. This session aims to convene researchers in the field of EHA, particularly of areas that have been struck by destructive earthquakes that were generated by previously unmapped active faults such as those in the Philippines, China, Japan, Taiwan, Western and Central US, Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia and elsewhere. Topics of interest include (but not limited to):
(1) Methodologies to locate hidden/buried active faults
(2) Thrust fault paleoseismology
(3) Seismotectonics of hidden active fault regions
(4) Deterministic and probabilistic earthquake hazard assessment
(5) Static stress transfer and time-dependent seismic hazard assessment
