Section AS - Atmospheric Sciences
Session Title Middle Atmosphere Science
Main Convener Dr. S. K. Dhaka (University of Delhi, India)
Co-convener(s) Prof. Shigeo Yoden (Kyoto University, Japan)
Prof. Hye-Yeong Chun (Yonsei University, Korea, South)
Prof. Zeyu Chen (Chinese Academy of Sciences, China)
Session Description This session is a part of an annual series at AOGS-AS meetings, which is appearing consistently and during AOGS 2013 it was screened among the top ten sessions. Papers related to any aspect of the dynamics, chemistry or physics of the atmosphere from near the tropopause to the lower thermosphere with time scales from weather to climate are appropriate for this session. Observation, data analyses, numerical experiments, and theoretical studies on the middle atmosphere are all solicited. Research topics include (but are not limited to):
- dynamics, transport and mixing in multiple spatial scales
- dynamics, radiation, microphysics, and chemistry in the tropical tropopause layer (TTL) or the extra-tropical upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (Ex-UTLS)
- vertical propagation of multi-scale and multi-type atmospheric waves
- intra-seasonal and inter-annual variations in several atmospheric parameters in the middle atmosphere
- remote influences in the middle atmosphere, including tropical/extra-tropical interactions, vertical couplings in the tropics and polar regions. Sudden stratospheric warming and its lateral coupling using satellite and model product data
- middle atmosphere responses to anthropogenic climate change and other external forcings such as 11-year solar cycle variations
- middle atmosphere influences on long-term changes in both the troposphere and upper atmosphere
-Fine scale dynamics using radars and other remote sensing technique such as lidar, and campaign launching of balloons

We invite new results that will provide new insights into the science of the middle atmosphere in a changing climate, therefore, the session would provide a platform to the international scientific community to discuss the current issues and their future projections.
