Session Title Mountain Response to Climate Change
Main Convener Dr. Katsuhiko Asahi (Shinshu University, Japan)
Co-convener(s) Prof. Tanaka Kenta (University of Tsukuba, Japan)
Dr. Taku M. Saitoh (Gifu University, Japan)
Session Description Mountains area typified by the western Pacific island-arc and the Himalayan orogen spreads widely in Asia-Oceania. Mountain areas, as well as Polar Regions, may be susceptible and vulnerable even to a minor environmental variation under the changing climate, because the temperature gradient in the vertical is more sensitive 800 times than that in latitude.
As mountain environment consists of various natural elements, multi-disciplinary understanding of mountain environmental response to climate change is required based on comprehensive environmental science research: meteorology, hydrology, geography, geology, biogeoscience, ecosystem ecology, ecosystem service, and biodiversity. In order to construct a framework for multi-disciplinary study of climate impact in the mountains, we welcome contributions using various approaches; field observation, experiments, remote sensing and numerical modeling, focusing on mountain environmental response in the past, current and future climate.
Selected papers will be invited to a full-paper publication of a special issue of an international journal.
