Session Description | In March 2007, the international program of Asian Monsoon Years (AMY 2007-2012) was endorsed by the WCRP-JSC as a new cross-cutting initiative between GEWEX and CLIVAR as a part of the International Monsoon Study (IMS) under WCRP. Since then, we organized 8 AMY International Workshops. AMY session was successfully held in the AOGS2008 at Busan, AOGS2009 at Singapore, AOGS2010 at Hyderabad, and AOGS2012 at Singapore. The goal of AMY is to integrate the ongoing and planned national projects in Asian countries and other international research programs and activities so as to improve understanding of the Asian monsoon system and prediction capacity for societal benefits as well as for additional benefit of each participating project. The activity focuses on a number of scientific objectives which include: ocean-atmosphere interaction, land-atmosphere interaction, diurnal and intra-seasonal to interannual variabilities of the Asian monsoon and human interactions with the monsoon, in particular, effect of aerosol on monsoon. In the years 2008-2010, a number of field observational campaigns were conducted under AMY, and the AMY-Reanalysis has been conducted by the MRI, JMA. Related analysis and modeling studies have been conducted. The 1st phase of AMY came to an end in 2012, and the Open Science Conference was held in 2013. Then, we decided to continue our 2nd phase activity (2013-2015), mainly on analysis and modeling. In this session, we will focus on the major achievements of AMY by observation, analysis and modeling in various time-scales from diurnal variations to decadal variations. |
