Section AS - Atmospheric Sciences
Session Title Diurnal-to-Intraseasonal Variability Over the Tropical Indian Ocean and Adjacent Regions
Main Convener Dr. Kunio Yoneyama (Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, Japan)
Co-convener(s) Dr. Chidong Zhang (University of Miami, United States)
Dr. Chuck Long (The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, United States)
Session Description Recent field campaigns conducted in and around the Indian Ocean from October 2011 to March 2012 (CINDY2011, DYNAMO, AMIE, and LASP) have provided unprecedented atmospheric and oceanic data to study the convective initiation mechanism of the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) and other relevant phenomena observed from the Indian Ocean through the Pacific. This session solicits contributions from observational and numerical studies from these campaigns and relevant experiments to discuss what we have learned so far and what we should do as a next step to advance our knowledge of the MJO and related phenomena. Implications for the new approach to understand the MJO from the viewpoints of theoretical and numerical studies are also welcome.
