Session Title Spatiotemporal Behavior of the Magnetosphere-ionosphere System
Main Convener Prof. Jesper Gjerloev (Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, United States)
Co-convener(s) Dr. Guan Le (NASA-GSFC, United States)
Dr. Ian Mann (University of Alberta, Canada)
Ms. Beate Humberset (University of Bergen, Norway)
Session Description Recent and current satellite missions (e.g. ESA SWARM, THEMIS and Cluster) are providing multi-point measurements allowing a separation of spatial gradients and temporal variability of measured electromagnetic parameters. Past single satellite missions have been crippled by their inherent observational shortcomings leading to the commonly used assumption that observed variations are due to spatial gradients or that the system is static. This session calls for paper that focuses on understanding how and why the magnetosphere-ionosphere (M-I) system varies in time and space. We welcome studies using observations from satellites, rockets, ground based instrumentation as well as theory providing insight into the space-time behavior of the M-I system.
