Session Title Styles of Magmatism in Shield Areas
Main Convener Dr. Jyotisankar Ray (University of Calcutta, India)
Co-convener(s) Dr. Chakravadhanula Manikyamba (National Geophysical Research Institute, India)
Session Description Magmatism plays a key role in mountain formation, as new ascending magmas produce additional mass and volume to the Earth’s surface and subsurface. Magmas form by partial melting of silicate rocks either in Earth's mantle, the continental or the oceanic crust. Three different types of magma generation are considered important for magma generation; these are : subduction, hot-spot volcanism and magmatism along rift zones.
The record of earliest magmatic activity in shield areas starts from Archean where profuse komatiitic rocks are produced. A wide variants of magmatic rocks are part and parcel of almost all shield areas which are time- dependent and they are generated at changing tectonic milieu. Styles of magmatism in different shield areas of the globe are subject matter of thorough research and understanding.
