Session Title Paleoseismology, Active Fault and Earthquake Geology
Main Convener Dr. Javed Malik (Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, India)
Co-convener(s) Prof. Kenji Satake (The University of Tokyo, Japan)
Dr. Masanobu Shishikura (National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, Japan)
Session Description Paleoseismology has evolved in several decades. Historical earthquake studies such as collection of data from archives, establishment of seismic intensity scales, compilation of historical earthquake catalogues, active fault studies have been done in Asian countries for many years. Along with this, for identification of older paleo-earthquakes geological methods such as trenching surveys across active faults, identifications of liquefaction features, and searching for evidences of such catastrophic events at archaeological sites or tsunami deposits in coastal environments have been carried out in some countries. These studies not only provides the information of behaviour of fault segments, pattern of deformation, recurrence interval but also are useful for long- and mid-term earthquake predications, including the probabilistic earthquake forecasting.
