Session Title Radar Remote Sensing of Middle and Upper Atmosphere and Ionosphere
Main Convener Dr. Satonori Nozawa (Nagoya University, Japan)
Co-convener(s) Dr. Nanan Balan (Nagoya University, Japan)
Dr. Yuichi Otsuka (Solar-Terrestrial Environment Laboratory, Nagoya University, Japan)
Dr. Hiroyuki Hashiguchi (Kyoto University, Japan)
Session Description This session provides a forum to present and discuss the developments in remote sensing of middle and upper atmosphere and ionosphere using novel instruments such as radars and lidars. Developing synergies between radar developing groups and radar user groups is an important purpose of this session. A number of radars and lidars are in operation around the world. Recent advances in radar technology have allowed the deployment of modern phased-array atmospheric and ionospheric radar facilities such as the MAARSY radar in Norway and PANSY in Antarctica. Proposals for new atmospheric and ionospheric radars in several places have been prepared simultaneously for financing, for example, phased array EISCAT_3D radar in northern Scandinavia, EMU radar in Indonesia and AMISR radar in Ethiopia. Several existing radar facilities are lately upgraded for new capabilities. Reports on recent technological developments of radar capabilities as well as science achievements using radar data and other supporting instruments are solicited.
