Session Title International Ocean Discovery Program Drilling Results in the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans, 2013-2015
Main Convener Dr. Keir Becker (University of Miami, United States)
Co-convener(s) Dr. Richard Arculus (The Australian National University, Australia)
Dr. Zhimin Jian (Tongji University, China)
Session Description This session will highlight initial results of the first two years of scientific ocean drilling by the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP). Starting in 2013, IODP drilling through 2015 will have been focused in the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans, involving D/V JOIDES Resolution operations in a region that is roughly centered on Singapore and is of obvious interest to AOGS countries. Themes to be represented in the session include geological history and tectonic evolution of the South China Sea (IODP Expedition 349), evolution of the Izu-Bonin-Mariana (IBM) Arc and implications for the origin of continental crust (Expeditions 350-352), and evolution of the Indian Ocean monsoon (Expeditions 353-355 planned from late November 2014 through May 2015). In addition, we welcome contributions related to scientific ocean drilling in the Western Pacific during the closing years of the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (2003-2013). This includes D/V Chikyu operations to understand subduction zone processes in Nankai Trough (NanTroSEIZE) and Japan Trench (JFAST), as well as JOIDES Resolution operations to understand evolution of the Asian Monsoon as recorded in the marginal basins between Japan, Korea, and China.
