Session Description | Output from the latest generation of climate models taking part in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) offers an unprecedented resource to help us understand the ocean and broader climate system and how and why it changes over a range of timescales. New insights are emerging regarding the dynamics and impacts of interannual climate variability (and how this might change in the future), causes for decadal climate variability (e.g. reasons for the recent surface warming hiatus), climate predictability on multi-year timescales and the drivers of long-term forced changes. This session invites contributions from researchers using the CMIP5 models to understand the workings of the climate system and to assess model performance in this respect. |
