Session Title The Maritime Continent Monsoon
Main Convener Prof. Shigeo Yoden (Kyoto University, Japan)
Co-convener(s) Dr. Tri Wahyu Hadi (Bandung Institute of Technology, Indonesia)
Prof. Tieh-Yong Koh (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore)
Session Description The Maritime Continent (MC) monsoon is related to both Asian and Australian monsoons with seasonal asymmetries under the geographical asymmetry with respect to the equator in continental scales. Complex topography in the MC region introduces wind-terrain interactions that cause multi-scale variations in time and space, from local diurnal variations to global-scale intraseasonal and interannual variations, which could modulate and interact with the MC monsoon with their own time scales. Intraseasonal variability in the MC is characterized by synoptic features and events, such as cold surge, Borneo vortex, and Madden-Julian Oscillation, and their interactions. Interannual modulations of the MC monsoon are associated with global atmosphere-ocean (AO) coupled variations, including El NiƱo-Southern Oscillation, Indian Ocean Dipole, Pacific Decadal Oscillation, Southern Annular Mode, etc.

Main topics of the session include
1. MC monsoon definition: theoretical review, migration, annual cycle, monsoon onset, etc.
2. MC monsoon variability: effects of Asia-Australian monsoon and global AO coupled variations on the MC
3. MC monsoon predictability: theoretical and practical studies on the MC monsoon prediction
4. The role of MC in global climate: effects of land/sea masses in the MC on the global AO coupled variations
5. Future development of science and technology (or collaborations) for monsoon studies in the MC regions

Theories, observations, data analyses, and numerical model studies are all welcome. We wish to sustain a platform for scientists with related interests to interact regularly and ultimately facilitate the growth of an active research community on the MC monsoon in Asia-Oceania with an international outreach.
