Session Description | How has the mass media been used as a way to bring the world of the geosciences to non-scientists? In this session, I hope to bring together researchers in the social sciences AND the geosciences to talk about: 1) their work in mass media dissemination and outreach, especially in rural areas where radio and local television are still important media. 2) research into how fiction-based mass media, such as films and TV shows, frame issues and concepts in the geosciences 3) how news shows cover geosciences, especially natural hazards such as earthquakes and floods 4) how scientists and mass media professionals work together in getting the word out on natural hazards, especially in the wake of issues such as climate change 5) how we can constantly engage mass media professionals in dialogue 6) the influence of new media, especially social media and online media, in contributing to knowledge about the geosciences Papers in this session will cover concepts in both the geosciences and social sciences. The papers will hopefully encourage discussion in how the media landscape has changed, and yet how our experiences can contribute to making mass media coverage better in the future. |
