Session Description Linking coastal waters with the deep ocean, semi-enclosed and shelf seas are often characterized by stratified, mesoscale-dominated circulation influenced by a combination of variable bottom topography, atmospheric forcing, large evaporation, river runoff, and tides to varying degrees. Physical dynamics are also tightly coupled with bio-geochemical processes in such environments. Contributions from all geographic regions are invited, with an emphasis on the northern and southern western Pacific regions. We invite studies related to themes such as innovative observational, theoretical, experimental and modelling studies of the hydrodynamics (e.g., waves, tides, currents, eddies, water mass distributions, mixing, budgets), transport of material (e.g. sediments, contaminants, trace metals, organic matter), and marine biogeochemistry (e.g., nutrient dynamics, primary production, acidification, algae blooms). Interdisciplinary investigations and studies of past, present and future climate variability in semi-enclosed and shelf seas are welcome. We particularly encourage comparative studies between different semi-closed ocean and shelf sea regions.
