Session Title New Developments And Applications Of Proxies In Paleoceanography
Main Convener Prof. Li-Ping Zhou (Peking University, China)
Co-convener(s) Dr. Allan Chivas (University of Wollongong, Australia)
Session Description Reconstruction of the past marine environment is achieved through proxies, i.e. those measurable properties of sedimentary records which can be related to one or a combination of physical, chemical, or biological environmental factors. Much of the recent progress in paleoceanography research is associated with advances in proxies through either development of new parameters that can record specific changes in oceanographic processes or improvements in methodology, analytical procedures and instrumentation with existing proxies. This session will provide an interdisciplinary platform for sharing the most recent development and applications of proxies in paleoceanography and hence will serve as an interactive forum for laboratory-based and field-based scientists. We invite both methodological and applied contributions on all kinds of proxies, from physical properties to organic biomarkers and from elemental ratios to stable or radiogenic isotopes, that are used for reconstructing past ocean temperature, salinity and ocean circulation, ventilation, productivity, nutrient utilization, pH, alkalinity and carbonate ion concentration, among others. Studies designed to improve proxy-environment calibration with modern processes are welcome. So are those addressing issues on interpretations, advantages, limitations and perspectives of well-established or newly developed proxies.
