Session Description The Maritime Continent (MC), with a unique mixture of land and oceans in the equatorial Indian and Pacific Ocean warm pool, plays an important role in the global weather-climate system. Equatorial atmospheric convection, the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), tropical waves and monsoons are all active in the MC. Rossby wave-like wavetrain forced by MC convection and teleconnection associated with the MJO influence weather and climate at higher latitudes. The ascending branch of the Walker circulation is over the MC, and its interannual variations are associated with the El NiƱo-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) variability. The Indonesian Throughflow (ITF), an important component of the global ocean general circulations, connects the tropical Pacific and Indian Oceans and affects not only properties of these two oceans but also global climate. Coastal upwelling near Sumatra is related to the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), an essential element of the regional climate. This session will address issues related to climate processes in the MC, such as atmospheric convection, the MJO, monsoons, ITF, upper-ocean mixing, air-sea interaction and others, and MC impact on global weather and climate. We wish this session will serve to attract more research attentions to climate processes and climate variability in the MC.
