Session Title | Cross-disciplinary Approaches To Environmental Disaster And Disaster Risk Management |
Main Convener | Dr. Fiona Williamson (National University of Singapore, Singapore) |
Co-convener(s) | Prof. Robert Wasson (National University of Singapore, Singapore) |
Session Description | Environmental disasters result from a combination of hazards (e.g. floods, tsunamis, earthquakes) and human vulnerability (e.g. location, preparedness for hazards). Disasters are globally the most damaging in Asia, where the emphasis is mostly focused on response, rather than prevention. Given the environmental and human components of disasters it is essential that a cross-disciplinary approach be adopted to produce the knowledge for effective, preventative Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR). This might include improving prediction models though the assimilation of historic data and evidence. Prevention or response designed by only considering vulnerability may fail if hazards are poorly identified or increasing. The ability to develop better risk forecasts is challenging but can be improved by cross-disciplinary co-operation. This panel therefore invites applications from different fields to discuss DRR and, in particular, to consider the application of historic evidence in predicting, or responding to, future environmental disasters. |
