Session Title | Interdisciplinary Research On Tsunamis - Five Years After The 2011 Tohoku-oki Tsunami |
Main Convener | Dr. Anawat Suppasri (Tohoku University, Japan) |
Co-convener(s) | Dr. Erick Mas (Tohoku University, Japan) Dr. Kazuhisa Goto (Tohoku University, Japan) Prof. James Goff (University of New South Wales, Australia) |
Session Description | Five years after the 2011 Tohoku-oki tsunami is the halfway stage in the reconstruction period determined by the Japanese government. New findings are helping us to better understand the mechanisms of such large events and also what countermeasure can be taken to reduce the impacts of future events. Moreover, these findings are encouraging other tsunami researchers globally to work on similar issues. This session welcome all works from geoscience specialists in pure and applied tsunami science as well as engineers and sociologists working in tsunami risk reduction. The session will cover tsunami research globally and all aspects of tsunami disaster namely 1) Seismic and non-seismic tsunami source and their return periods, 2) Tsunami modelling techniques and their application, 3) Deterministic, probabilistic tsunami analysis and other statistical approaches, 4) Tsunami damage and risk assessment at both micro and macro scales and 5) Tools and dissemination methods for tsunami disaster risk reduction such as tsunami warning, tsunami evacuation and disaster education. This session will be a platform for presentations and discussions of interdisciplinary research on tsunamis to reach its goal of a tsunami-safer world. |
