Session Title Wildfires In A Changing Climate: Characterizing Wildfires On Regional And Local Scales
Main Convener Dr. Boksoon Myoung (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Climate Center, Korea, South)
Co-convener(s) Dr. Menas Kafatos (Chapman University, United States)
Dr. Seung Hee Kim (Chapman University, United States)
Dr. Son Nghiem (California Institute of Technology, United States)
Session Description Wildfires are a part of natural processes related to regional vegetation and climate, but they have had significant ecological, social and economical impacts. Significant growth of urban areas and expansion of the wildland-urban interface have exacerbated wildfire hazard to lives, properties, and human health. With an increasing risk of wildfires associated with frequent droughts over Asia and across many regions of the world, understanding wildfire characteristics and improving fire management in vast wild lands are essential for decision makers and fire agencies. This session will focus on observational analyses, models, new technologies for wildfire research and management, including observations from measurements on the surface to satellite sensors in space. Specific research topics include connections of wildfire risks and events with short-term and long-tern climate change and variability; large scale atmospheric circulations related with wildfires; pre-fire planning and risk analysis and management; fire detection and monitoring; post-fire evaluation and ecosystem recovery; advanced technologies for wildfire; and fire impacts on and interactions with the environment and socioeconomic activities.
