Session Title Solar-terrestrial Environment Indices: Toward Integrated Sciences For Space Weather And Space Climate Prediction
Main Convener Dr. Akiko Fujimoto (Kyushu University, Japan)
Co-convener(s) Dr. Yuki Kubo (National Institute of Information and Communications Technology, Japan)
Dr. Richard Marshall (Bureau of Meteorology, Australia)
Prof. Toshihiko Iyemori (Kyoto University, Japan)
Session Description The study of the solar-terrestrial environment has been historically developed by the various ground-based observations before the in-situ observations carried out. Various “indices” (e.g. f10.7, Dst, Kp, PC, AE, asy/sym, EE) are defined to evaluate quantitatively the global time development and scale of disturbance phenomena in the space based on the ground-based observations. In recent years, these indices are not only utilized in space weather research, but also recognized as powerful tools for space environment monitoring. Huge solar-terrestrial observational archives are essential to study the space climate by using quantitative standards.
This session covers all topics relating to historical remarks, latest results, applications, improvements and new proposals of various indices for understanding the space weather and space climate, and so on. Research fields are from the Sun down to the ionosphere and atmosphere, not being limited to the magnetosphere. In addition, contributions that the ground-based and satellite data, modeling, simulation are welcome.
