Session Description | Solar filaments are spectacular phenomena in the solar corona, with low temperature and high density plasmas suspended in the hot and tenuous corona. They are of interest to many colleagues for various reasons. First, their formation is related to coronal condensation and thermal catastrophe, which are not fully understood. Second, the oscillations and waves observed in the filaments open an exciting window to diagnose the magnetic and thermal properties. Finally, since they are a major progenitor of coronal mass ejections (CMEs), solar filaments are the core of the CME research. With this session, we hope to attract colleagues with different backgrounds in order to exchange recent ideas and provoke new directions of investigation. |
