Session Title Complex Tectonic Processes Along Mixed-crust Margins
Main Convener Dr. Mario Juan Aurelio (University of the Philippines, Philippines)
Co-convener(s) Dr. Weiwei Ding (The Second Institute of Oceanography State Oceanic Administration, China, China)
Dr. Dieter Franke (Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe, Hannover, Germany, Germany)
Session Description Plate boundaries along crusts of varying characteristics (oceanic to continental to transitional) produce complex tectonic features that bear significant implications to the development of the margin. Such is the case where the Eurasian Plate meets with the Philippine Sea Plate from Taiwan to Palawan (Philippines) to Borneo, where both subduction and collision zones dominate the plate boundary. Studying this kind of active margin provides valuable information in unlocking complex tectonic features in inactive regions that were similarly situated in the past, but whose origins remain uncertain or unknown. It further provides important parameters necessary in assessing these margins in terms of their mineral and energy resource potential, as well as their vulnerability to geologic hazards. Papers that present recent results of tectonic studies along the Taiwan-Palawan-Borneo transect, or from different regions but situated along similar tectonic settings, are invited.
