Session Description Microorganisms are ubiquitous in natural habitats and have played an important role in many aspects of the evolution of the Earth’s surface for more than three billion years. Sediments and rocks are archives of the Earth’s evolutionary history; however, the microbial record in these archives is still unclear. The goal of this session is to address diverse issues on geomicrobiology, biogeochemistry, and biogeophsyical modeling of the sediment records at the field scale, as well as observation and simulation of microbial activities at the laboratory scale. Contributions on the following topics are particularly welcome: microbial diversity, microbial mineralization and products, microbial activity in extreme environments, mineralogy and isotopes of biomineral- and life essential elements (e.g., C, O, N, S, H, Fe), magnetotactic bacteria and magnetic signals, microbial enhanced weathering processes, biogeochemical cycling of elements, biomarkers in sediments and rocks, potential paleo- environmental/climate proxies, and related applications in earth and planetary sciences.
