Session Description | This session forms the contribution of the ICSU-ROAP-SGNHDR [International Council for Science - Regional Office for Asia-Pacific Steering Group on Natural Hazards and Disaster Risk] Understanding Disaster Risk is set as the first priority in the "Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030", as adopted by the UN. This session therefore aims to bring together scientists focused both on natural hazards and also those seeking to use that knowledge to improve disaster risk reduction (DRR), especially in the Asia & Oceania Region. We encourage the presentation of research findings on any natural hazard type, such as earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides, volcanic activity, tropical cyclones (typhoons), river floods, storm surges, drought and wildfire. Field-based investigations, new theoretical approaches, catastrophe risk modelling, or simulation studies are all encouraged. Also welcome for submission is research that addresses DRR at the interface of science, social science and policy. Relevant DRR themes might include: improving hazard vulnerability assessment, the application of GIS or remote sensing tools, culturally-appropriate adaptation strategies, communicating risk, and building resilient societies. |
