Session Description | The Southern Ocean is the most remote and the least understood ocean in the world, but it plays an important role in climate system. Advances in observation technologies, modeling capabilities, and data collection has established the infrastructure for a deeper understanding of physical, chemical and biological processes in the Southern Ocean. This will also help us better determine the Southern Ocean’s mean state, variability, response to external forcing, and reduce uncertainties in climate projections. This session is open to all with an interest in 6 overarching science priorities (themes) identified by the Southern Ocean Observing System (SOOS, http://www.soos.aq), regardless of approach (e.g., in-situ observations, remote sensing, modeling). The 6 themes include heat and freshwater balance, ocean overturning circulation, Antarctic sea ice, Antarctic ice sheet and sea level change, carbon uptake, and ecosystem. This session will bring together observationalists and modelers to exchange their insights, serving as a forum for the discussion and communication of scientific advances in the understanding of the Southern Ocean processes, and foster continued multidisciplinary research into the Southern Ocean. |
