Session Description The Maritime Continent (MC), with a unique mixture of land and ocean in the equatorial Indian and Pacific Ocean warm pool, plays an important role in the global weather-climate system. It has been found that variations with periods ranging from diurnal to intraseasonal and interannual time scales in the MC and surrounding waters are linked each other via local air-sea feedback. The diurnal cycle can be considered the heart beat of the multiscale variability in the MC region. However, models cannot reproduce the observed diurnal cycle of precipitation over the MC. The intraseasonal variations in this region behave in terms of the monsoon and Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO) and can have a significant influence on weather and climate over East Asia in summer. So far, there is limited understanding about ocean feedback on the MJO and about the role of air-sea interactions on the MJO. Meanwhile, interannual variability in the ascending branch of the Walker circulation over the MC is associated with variability in the El NiƱo-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). This session will present a collection of studies on possible physical mechanisms/processes of air-sea feedback on multi-timescales over the surrounding waters of the MC. We hope this session will serve to attract more research attention to climate processes and climate variability in the MC.
