Session Title | New Perspectives of the Magnetosphere-ionosphere System from Numerical Models and Synoptic Observations |
Main Convener | Dr. Anthony Lui (Johns Hopkins University, United States) |
Co-convener(s) | Dr. Gang Lu (National Center for Atmospheric Research, United States) |
Session Description | Increasingly sophisticated numerical models and new developments in ground-based and space-borne observational capabilities have contributed greatly to the understanding of the coupled magnetosphere-ionosphere system. Comparisons of model simulations with observations from multiple platforms provide a means to test and improve our understanding of the physical processes pertained to this coupled system. Recent results from comprehensive modeling studies and from multi-instrument observations of magnetospheric and ionospheric dynamics are solicited, including storm and substorm related disturbances in the magnetosphere, structured plasma density and flow distributions in the polar ionosphere as well as in the auroral and sub-auroral regions. Papers that focus on the inter-connection between the magnetosphere and the ionosphere are particularly suitable to this session. |
