Session Description | Freshwater and marine ecosystems play important role in global cycling of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N). Energy sources, redox conditions, nutrient loads in freshwater and marine ecosystems along with biota, in particular microbial communities, strongly influences the cycling of C and N. Over the past few years, scientists working on C and N cycling of freshwater and marine ecosystems have made exciting new advances which have consequences for global C and N budget. This international session encourages submission from all aspects of research dealing with carbon and nitrogen cycling in areas of freshwater (e.g. lakes, rivers) and marine domains (e.g. mangroves, estuaries) with a particular emphasis on the role of biotic communities such as microbes (e.g. archaea, bacteria) in mediating C and N cycling. Submissions are encouraged from biogeochemists, ecosystem modellers, microbiologists and molecular biologists working on C and N cycling. Moreover, submissions are particularly welcome from early career scientists working in this area and using molecular tools such as next generation sequencing (NGS) to understand the functional role of microbial communities in cycling of C and N. |
