Session Description It is well known that land-use/land-cover changes may have significant effects on the climate system by altering the surface energy partitioning as well as water cycle through modulation of heat, moisture, and momentum exchanges between the surface and atmosphere. In spite of the well-established theory, the impacts of land-use/land-cover changes on the climate are a topic for debate because of the nonlinear responses of the climate to land-use/land-cover changes in the models, depending on the location of the region of study, land-surface scheme used, and other assumptions incorporated into the models. In this regard, this session invites diverse research activities to better understand and represent land-atmospheric interactions, and aims to share recent advances in both theoretical and practical sides through observational and modelling studies. We are particularly interested in topics addressing 1) the physical mechanisms of land-use/land-cover changes shaping the climate, 2) the remote and local impacts on climate induced by land-atmosphere interactions, 3) sensitivity of climate to land-use/land-cover changes on various spatiotemporal scales, and 4) advanced modelling skills on how to properly represent land-atmosphere interactions. We expect that this session will provide a platform to discuss the progress and limitation of the current research, and to foster communication for future collaborations toward the interdisciplinary and integrative approaches for both observations and modelling communities.
