Main Convener | Prof. Yali Luo (China Meteorological Administration, China) |
Co-convener(s) | Prof. Johnny Chan (City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong SAR) Dr. Pradeep Mandapaka Venkata (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore) Dr. Edmond Lo (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore) Prof. Xiaosheng Qin (Nanyang Technological Univ., Singapore) |
Session Description | The focus of this session is to discuss recent advances in the understanding and forecasting of heavy rainfall and floods. We welcome all relevant research works involving observational, theoretical, and numerical modeling studies. Abstracts in the following research areas are particularly encouraged: 1) The multiple-scale physical processes that govern initiation and evolution of heavy-rain-producing convective systems, 2) Storm-internal dynamics and microphysics that lead to production of heavy rainfall at the surface, 3) Characteristics and dynamics of extremely heavy rainfall, 4) Intrinsic and practical predictability of rainfall events, 5) Impact of data assimilation on quantitative precipitation forecast (QPF) of heavy rainfall, 6) Evaluation of convection-permitting NWP for heavy rainfall events, and 7) Development of ensemble forecast technique and its application to heavy rainfall prediction. |
