| Session Description | Space-borne remote sensing instruments provide the vital component of global observing systems for planet Earth. In particular, next generation platforms on both polar and geostationary orbits are advanced since EOS A-Train constellations and Japanese Himawari-8. There will be a series state-of-the-art Chinese, Japanese, Korean, United States and European satellites in the space in the following years. New and emerging methods for atmospheric remote sensing are proved to assist the numerical weather prediction (NWP), monitoring/nowcasting and climate study. Towards these, the space-borne satellite data assimilation and applications are essential and critical for the atmospheric science in general. This session will focus on the current accomplishments and future advancements of the satellite data assimilation and applications for weather forecasts, diagnostics and climate study. Community members are invited to bring to the meeting their interests in the related elements. With individual presentations from experts, and hallway informal discussions, this session will foster international, institutional, and personal collaboration and interaction to advance remote sensing knowledge and skill to meet increasing demands for understanding and management of our environment. |
