Session Title Ecohydrological Responses to Environmental Changes and Efficient Water Resources Management in Dryland Regions
Main Convener Prof. Ke Zhang (Hohai University, China)
Co-convener(s) Dr. Jingfeng Wang (Georgia Institute of Technology, United States)
Prof. Weijiang Zhang (Ningxia University, China)
Session Description Dryland regions cover about 18% of the Earth’s land surface and support 16% of the global population. Dryland ecosystems are fragile and susceptible to environmental changes. Recent climate changes and human activities such as urbanization, irrigation practices, and groundwater depletion have imposed large impacts in these regions. Understanding the ecohydrological responses of dryland ecosystems to recent environmental changes are critical for projecting future hydrological regime changes and ecological responses in these regions. Developing more efficient water resources management technologies, methods and strategies are also imperative to mitigate and adapt the potential negative impacts of environmental changes in these regions. This session invites all studies on investigating how hydrological and ecological processes in drylands respond to environmental changes, and how to improve water resources utilization through technology innovation and policy implementation in dryland regions.
