Session Description Understanding interactions between the Indo-Pacific Ocean and Asian monsoon is very important to reveal spatial-temporal characteristics of multiscale variabilities of Asian monsoon and their causes, improve monsoon climate prediction and enhance the ability of extreme events/severe disaster risk assessment as well. Great progress has been made in understanding impacts of tropical Indo-Pacific Ocean on Asian monsoon, however, the effects of Asian monsoon on tropical Indo-Pacific Ocean and interactions between the Indo-Pacific Ocean and Asian monsoon as well as the relevant mechanisms remain to be fully explored. Some major scientific issues in the area of research include Indo-Pacific multiscale climate variations (joint modes of Indo-Pacific sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTA), air-sea interactions in the warm pool and Bay of Bengal regions, upper-middle ocean processes, etc.), their climate effects and relevant mechanisms; Variabilities of freshwater flux and salinity in the Indo-Pacific Ocean, their influences and possible mechanisms; Feedback of Asian monsoon multiscale anomalies to the Indo-Pacific Ocean and its mechanism; How to improve the global climate system model (with India-Pacific Ocean as the focus) so as to improve capacity of Asian monsoon prediction? The symposium aims to strengthen understanding in interactions between the Indo-Pacific Ocean and Asian monsoon, and exchange the relevant latest progress. We invite papers on all aspects of Indo-Pacific Ocean and Asian monsoon interaction and its impacts on extreme weather and climate events, multiscale processes of both tropical Indo-Pacific ocean circulation systems and Asian monsoon systems, and Asian monsoon prediction.
