Session Title Mantle and Core: Structure, Dynamics, Chemistry, and Seismology
Main Convener Dr. Kenji Kawai (The University of Tokyo, Japan)
Co-convener(s) Dr. Maxim Ballmer (ETH Zurich, Switzerland)
Prof. Taku Tsuchiya (Ehime University, Japan)
Prof. Murli Manghnani (University of Hawaii, United States)
Session Description Recent exciting progress in high-pressure geochemistry, mineral physics and geophysics has revealed detailed structure in the lower mantle and core. This progress builds on advances in all sub-disciplines of the Earth Sciences, and in particular on the interaction and synergy between disciplines. For example, it is now understood that the Earth's deep interior is more heterogeneous than previously thought, and that the mantle and core evolve as a closely coupled system. This session invites researchers with a broad range of expertise interested in the deep Earth to fill existing gaps in our knowledge, thus contributing toward a more comprehensive understanding of the Earth’s interior and its evolution through time. In particular, we invite contributions that combine multiple disciplines, and/or use novel approaches.
