Session Description | Radiation belt physics is currently in an era of unprecedented opportunity and progress, due to powerful new observations, theory and simulations. Yet there are many unanswered questions in the field. Evolving simulation methods, including global field models and detailed simulation of wave-particle interactions, can bring us closer to placing new observations in a comprehensive theoretical context. In this session, we solicit contributions that would bring simulations and observations towards a more cohesive understanding. We particularly encourage presentations that seek to answer one of more of the following questions: What are the missing pieces in our understanding of particle acceleration due to wave-particle interactions? What should be included in models/simulations that is currently not? Which wave modes contribute dominantly to wave-driven precipitation? How important are nonlinear interactions with high-frequency waves to the overall acceleration and/or loss of particle populations? Contributions from observational studies, including measurements from the Van Allen Probes and ARASE missions, theoretical work, and numerical modeling are welcome. |
