Session Title Geospace System Response to Impulse Space Weather Events

Session Description The geospace system response to impulse space weather events, such as geomagnetic storms driven by interplanetary shocks, CIRs and CMEs, transient radiation events of solar flares and eclipses, constitutes a significant part of space weather research. This response, however, is still poorly understood and not well quantified. Recent developments in the coupled geospace modeling, new data acquisition and analysis technique, new satellite missions, and the occurrence of some interesting space weather events in last few years have made it possible to better our understanding of the physical mechanics involved in these events and the impacts of these events on the whole geospace system. This session is devoted to understanding when and how the coupled magnetosphere-ionosphere-thermosphere system reacts to impulse space weather events in terms of its global pattern, disturbance properties and propagation characteristics, and the recovery of the system after the events. Examples of the topics of this session include the variation of ionosphere electrodynamics with different impulse events, changes and recovery of global ionosphere and thermosphere during the events, travelling ionosphere disturbance, irregularities, and the physical processes driving these geospace responses.
