Session Title Continuing the Tidal Tale: the Story of Tides and Their Impacts
Main Convener Dr. Robin Robertson (Xiamen University, Malaysia)
Co-convener(s) Dr. Adam Devlin (The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong SAR)
Session Description Man has been measuring tides for centuries from the first stick pushed into the mud, to tide gauges, to modern satellite altimetry. Consequently, tides are an old problem, which many people thought were solved a century ago. However,a couple of decades ago when the first altimeters went up, tides were found to contaminate the signal of the mean currents. So an effort to understand the tides and prescribe them was undertaken in order to remove them more accurately. Furthermore, internal tides were found to be a major source of mixing in the ocean. Instead of the simple problem that they thought was solved, tides were found to be more complex and require further research, particularly in coastal oceans and the internal tides. For many researchers, tides are a nuisance to be removed so they can better quantify the mean currents. However, others focus their research on tides and their many impacts, such as affecting mean currents, flushing, mixing, eddies, sea ice, and ice shelves, to name a few.

This session welcomes all types of research on tides and their impacts as determined through satellite and in-situ observations, models, and/or theoretical studies
