Session Title | The Science and Prediction of Heavy Rainfall and Floods |
Main Convener | Prof. Yali Luo (Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences, China) |
Co-convener(s) | Prof. Johnny Chan (City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong SAR) |
Session Description | The focus of this session is to discuss recent advances in the understanding and forecasting of heavy rainfall and floods. We welcome all relevant research works involving observational, theoretical, and numerical modeling studies. Abstracts in the following research areas are particularly encouraged: 1) The multiple-scale physical processes that govern initiation and evolution of heavy-rain-producing storms, 2) Characteristics, dynamics, and predictability of hydrometeorological extremes, 3) Hydrometeorological extremes under climate change, 4) Improving quantitative precipitation forecast (QPF) through data assimilation, 5) Evaluation and improvement of NWP models for heavy rainfall events, and 6) Development of ensemble forecast technique and its application to predicting heavy rainfall and floods. |
