| Session Description | The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), the primary intraseasonal variability in the tropics, connects weather and climate globally. The MJO is crucial to the onset of the East Asian monsoon and tropical cyclone genesis in the western North Pacific. The MJO also interact with ENSO and other climate modes. Despite its recognized importance, understanding of the MJO remains incomplete and prediction skill of the MJO limited. MJO initiation and its propagation over the Maritime Continent (MC) are two major challenging problems. This session solicits contributions addressing a broad range of issues on theory, modeling, prediction and observation of the MJO, its initiation over the Indian Ocean, its propagation over the MC, its impact on global weather, extreme event, and its interaction with various climate modes. |
