Session Description Atmospheric, oceanic and hydrologic processes are the key drivers of earth system processes. Observational data on the earth system state and flux are available from both in-situ and remotely-sensed observing systems. By incorporating such observations into earth system models through data assimilation, the most accurate (optimal) estimates of earth system states and fluxes may be obtained. Due to the multidisciplinary nature of earth system modeling and prediction, it is important to understand the recent progress on modeling and data assimilation in these major disciplines of geosciences. Topics for the session include but are not limited to: 1) assimilation techniques and theories; 2) treatment of nonlinear and discontinuous processes; 3) assimilation of in-situ and/or remotely-sensed observational data; 4) sensitivity analysis and its application to adaptive (targeting) observation; 5) uncertainty quantification, and 6) predictability and ensemble prediction studies relevant to data assimilation. This session is especially organized in honor of the late Yoshi K. Sasaki, who pioneered in applying the variational technique to data assimilation of geosciences problems. A series of books have been published by the Springer as the outcome of the symposium: the first editorial volume in 2009 (http://www.springer.com/978-3-540-71055-4), Vol. II in 2013 (http://www.springer.com/978-3-642-35087-0), and Vol. III in January 2017 (http://www.springer.com/9783319434148). We will continuously publish the book series with selected papers from the symposium and invited ones from the prominent scientists in the field of data assimilation.
