Session Title Vegetation-air Pollution Interaction at the Urban-rural Interface
Main Convener Dr. Saewung Kim (University of California, Irvine, United States)
Co-convener(s) Prof. Meehye Lee (Korea University, Korea, South)
Prof. Xuemei Wang (Jinan University, China)
Session Description The two-way interactions between air pollution and vegetation have been attracting interests in urban-rural regions including in the Asian megacity environments. The natural base emissions of reactive biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) needs to be clearly characterized for precise diagnosis and predictions of regional air quality. It also has been known that the exacerbating air quality in the region invigorates changes the BVOC emission profiles as plants take advantage of BVOC emissions as stress relief mechanisms.
We will implement this session to discuss biosphere-atmosphere interactions in both perspectives – impacts of air quality from and to BVOC emissions. Therefore, this will galvanize multi-discipline discussion and potential collaboration. In addition, We plan to balance between observation and modeling studies in the session. Finally, there have been a series of field campaigns, conducted and planned. Thus, we will actively advertise the research teams to solicitate papers.
