AOGS Election of Office Bearers - 2010 to 2012

back

Namsik Park (CV)
Professor
School of Civil Engineering
Dong-A University, South Korea

The two most important functions of AOGS are the annual meetings and the publications of Advances in Geosciences (AdGeo), collection of peer-reviewed papers collected from participants of annual meetings. Since 2005, when the current section classification began, the number of HS sessions at annual meetings grew steadily from 11 in 2005 to 23 in 2008. HS volumes of AdGeo have been successful as well; the average numbers of papers and pages for the three published volumes are 29 and 295, respectively.

The meetings and the publications provide excellent opportunities for members to get acquainted with others. However, twice-a-year exposures to AOGS may be too few to many members. I’ll try to provide additional ways with which members can interact with others more frequently. One option may be an E-newsletter. We may expand the Society webpage so that HS Section matters get more attention. At each annual meeting Section Business Session is the only opportunity for members to gather for general discussion. However, member participation is not too high. AOGS may also strengthen ties with relevant national organizations to provide information to members in other nations. If I am elected, I’ll try to promote more interactions, on-line and/or off-line, among HS Section members.

Professional Activities

I have been an active AOGS member. My first involvement in AOGS was through the 2nd Annual Meeting held in Singapore in 2005. Since then I attended every Annual Meeting. I have been serving as a HS Section Secretary and the HS volume editor-in-chief for volumes 4, 6 and 11 of AdGeo. I am currently serving as a Publication Committee member. For the 5th Annual Meeting held in Busan, Korea in 2008, I served as a co-chair of the Local Advisory Committee (LAC).

Additional to AOGS activities, I am serving as a chairman of the publication committee of monthly magazine “Water & Future” of Korea Water Resources Association, and as a chairman of Urban Disaster Management Committee of Korean Disaster Prevention Association among other activities. My research interests include optimization of water-resources development and management, with major emphasis on groundwater in coastal areas.

Personal History

My bachelor’s degree is from Hanyang University in Korea. My postgraduate degrees are obtained in USA: master degree from the Pennsylvania State University and Ph.D. degree from Cornell University. All my degrees are from Civil Engineering. I had worked for HydroGeoLogic, Inc., a groundwater consulting firm in USA, before I became a professor at the department of Civil Engineering, Dong-A University in Korea in 1993.
