I am a geomorphologist and a professor in the Department of Geography at the National University of
Singapore. My research is principally concerned with soil erosion and sediment delivery in catchment
systems. I have conducted fieldwork in many parts of the Asia-Oceania region, most notably in China
and Southeast Asia. I previously held the position of AOGS Treasurer. When my four year term was
completed in 2011, I was elected as Secretary-General. I have also acted as Chair of the Local Advisory
Committee for two of the recent AOGS meetings in Singapore in 2009 and 2012. In the absence of other
candidates stepping forward for nomination, I have agreed to stand for the post of Secretary-General
again which would extend my time in the post for a further three years. I therefore offer some
continuity.
AOGS has reached an important moment in its evolution. The annual meetings have developed a
character and reputation that draws attention to geosciences research conducted in the region. The
launch of the Society’s journal Geoscience Letters provides and opportunity to develop the reputation of
AOGS further. Yet AOGS must avoid complacency and develop strategically to best serve its members,
advocate geosciences research in the region and promote cooperation between geoscientists.
Having been involved in the planning of the Joint Assembly with the AGU Western Pacific Geophysics
Meeting, I am keen to pursue opportunities for AOGS to liaise with other geosciences organizations
while maintaining its distinct flavor and commitment to the region. I have previously held talks with
EGU about initiatives for specialised joint events. I believe that AOGS Council needs to consider what it
means to a geoscientist to be a member of AOGS and work towards enhancing the experience. This may
involve initiatives such as establishing short-term working groups, AOGS satellite meetings and
sponsorship of smaller events. Fundamentally the role of the Secretary-General is to uphold the
standards and reputation of AOGS.
