The Korea Water Resources Corporation, K-water, plays a leading role in research and management of water resources and water-related disaster monitoring and mitigation in South Korea. The K-water has initiated a series of space programs since early 2010s for sustainable water resource management and water-related disaster monitoring. The series of satellite programs for ten years between 2025 and 2034 include a C-band SAR, a L-band SAR and a radar altimeter. Among the planned space-borne water body observation systems, a C-band SAR mounted on the Compact Advanced Satellite 500 (CAS500) is the first one with a primary mission of water-related disaster monitoring. The C-band SAR system is being designed with a ground resolution of 10 m over 150 km swath. A principal concept of the SAR instrument is the usage of large unfoldable reflector antennas at a physical aperture of 3 m in combination with digital feed arrays, which will have a capability of digital beam forming. In addition to the primary objective, the C-band SAR will also be used for a wide variety of applications such as measuring areas and depth of inundation, moisture content of soil, sea ice distribution and characteristics, soil erosion, etc. Preparation for the K-water C-band SAR mission is made of two stages: The first stage, from 2019 to 2021, is for elaborate system designs and feasibility studies of various applications. The second stage, from 2022 to 2025, is for building and launching the satellite system and developing application tools. The K-water C-band SAR system will offer invaluable opportunities to broaden the understanding of hydrological system in Asia as well as to reduce water-related disaster risks in cooperation with pre-existing international hydrosphere missions such as GCOM-W, SWOT, GPM, SCLP, etc.

Biography

Joong-Sun Won received B.S. and M.S. degrees in geology and geophysics in 1983 and 1985, respectively, from the Yonsei University, South Korea, and Ph.D. in geophysics from the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada, in 1993. From 1993–1996, he was a Senior Scientist with the Marine Geology Division, Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute. Since March 1996 he has been a professor at the Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea, where he is a Professor in the Department of Earth System Sciences. His research interests include remote sensing, tidal flats, geohazard, signal processing, radar interferometry, and velocity retrieval from SAR data.
