Biography

Dr. Liying Wan is Director of the Ocean Forecast Division at the National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center. Her expertise lies in marine data assimilation, ocean modeling, and regional ocean-atmosphere interaction studies. She has led national and international projects, including China's Key R&D Program and the China-ASEAN Marine Safety Initiative. Dr. Wan has developed operational forecasting systems for sea surface temperature, salinity, and currents, contributing to regional disaster warning and environmental services. She actively participates in global initiatives such as OceanPredict and serves as a peer reviewer for leading journals in oceanography and atmospheric science.


Prediction and Assessment for marine heatwave in coastal regions

Marine heatwaves, characterized by prolonged periods of anomalously warm sea surface temperatures, can have far-reaching consequences. They can disrupt marine ecosystems by triggering coral bleaching, altering species distributions, and promoting harmful algal blooms. Efforts to predict and assess marine heatwaves in coastal regions have become increasingly sophisticated, leveraging advanced modeling techniques and real-time monitoring systems. By combining historical data with climate models, scientists can forecast the likelihood of marine heatwave events, providing valuable insights for stakeholders to prepare and respond effectively. Assessment tools play a crucial role in evaluating the impacts of marine heatwaves on coastal ecosystems and communities. By conducting comprehensive assessments, policymakers can make informed decisions to protect vulnerable marine environments and coastal populations.
